Wednesday 28 November - Ruth's Canarian birthday

Current location: Gran Canaria
11.11am, Non-stop fun!
Today is Ruth's 27th birthday so we went celebrating!! We started off with a visit to Aroma, a coffee shop in Galdar that they boys love. We had a bonbon (espresso with condensed milk) and a ham and cheese croissant to set us up for our next activity: the water park! Despite a few reservations when we first got to the park (which looked like a giant car park with a really sad sealion in), we found the slides and rides and had the best time!

In a happy, fun birthday mood, we next went to the sand dunes, which looked a lot like a desert! It was seriously one of the most breathtaking places I have ever been – and one of the windiest! You could see for miles but all that was around you was sand. Weird, eerie, beautiful and not like anything I remember seeing before. We took a bottle of champers tried to find somewhere slightly sheltered to drink it but failed, so just ran around like mad people instead.

One thing Ruth was adamant she wanted for her birthday was a cocktail with a sparkler in it, so we went to the touristy bit of the island, where we found lots of bars able to help Ruth out with her request. We were even treated to another incredible sunset – we're being spoilt!

Getting hungry after our day of fun, Andy suggested a teppanyaki restaurant nearby. It was potentially the best suggestion ever made. We ate soooo much food, and it was all such GOOD food. Cooked in front of us on a hot plate, and served up in six courses with some of it even bring thrown at us (Jack and Andy caught it in their mouths; Ruth and I didn't), it was an experience as well as a fantastic meal. Ruth went so far as to say it was the best meal she'd ever had in life (it's definitely in my top 3). Happy birthday Ruthy and thanks Andy for all the suggestions and organising!
