Tuesday 27 November - Head in the clouds

Current location: Gran Canaria
11.11am, Not doing much at all. What I was actually doing was lying on the balcony trying to decide if I could be bothered to go and get my book or not. This is definitely a lazy holiday!

Although it was quite warm today, it was also very cloudy. But we consulted our (Andy's) Canarian friends, who convinced us to go up the mountains with them today… It would be fine above the clouds, they said!

By the time we'd started driving up the winding road, the cloudiness has turned into rain. Then a storm. Then there were rockslides falling from the cliffs onto the road. I was bloody petrified and kept my eyes closed most of the way. When we finally reached the top alive, it turned out we hadn't got above the storm clouds; in fact, we were still in the middle of them.

Trying to decide what to do, we opted for eating the yummy picnic lunch we had bought. This included a cooked chicken that I had stripped on the way up (the car smelt like chicken for quite a while), avocados, crusty bread, crisps and pears. The boys realised quite soon that they weather wasn't going to improve and we couldn't even get out the car (it was VERY rainy!) so after our car picnic, we went back down the winding roads.

Determined to make the most of our adventure and not just return home having sat in a car for a few hours, we went to Las Palmas for a windy walk along the front. That night we made dinner…and played poker. We're starting to get obsessed (and better at poker)...
