Saturday 22 February – Rome on day 3

Current location: Rome
11.11am, Having breakfast at home. Then we stored our bags (luckily our apartment owner has a left luggage business!) and went walking again. I love how much walking and drinking we have done this holiday. We went to see the Colosseum, which was incredible, and then walked to the Vatican to see St Peter's Basilica. It was a hot and long walk but we went along the river; it was surprising to see lots of homeless people living in tents down by the river though, in such a busy city.

When we got to the Vatican, Cat, Sarah and I decided we wanted to go inside, so the race was on to get through the queues and up there before we had to turn around and get to the airport. Emily sat in a cafe and read her book, and we skedaddled there, saw the views, said some prayers, loved it, skedaddled back down, picked up Emily and power-walked back. Then we got a taxi to the airport, and all a bit tired and hot, lost our minds. An airport beer later and we were OK again.

The only strange bit of this holiday is seeing the Coronavirus start to have an effect. Obviously I am writing this at a later date, when we know what's happened because of it, but back then it was only just being talked about. The guy who owned our apartment was feeling a bit strange about it, as a few people had died on the day we were leaving, and he said the country was getting a bit scared, but it didn't feel like a very 'real' threat then, if I'm honest. Seeing people in masks in the airport seemed a bit like overkill, and getting back to London, there was not much talk of it or awareness. So strange looking back, and so so so glad we snuck our holiday in there before travel was so heavily restricted. I will always remember this amazing holiday!
