Wednesday 17 December – Welcome to Tasmania! Day 1

Current location: Hobart, Tasmania
11.11am, Trying to fid our way out of Hobart. Andy and I are on holiday – yippee!!! – in beautiful Tasmania. He's never been before, and I came when I was 11, so we didn't know much about the country and decided to have five days of exploring. So, we started with getting lost trying to get out of Hobart. Before too long we found our way, and then spent most of the day ambling along in our lovely little hire car, taking our time and stopping off whenever we felt like it. Our final destination for the day was Cradle Mountain Lodge, in Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, but we took our time getting there, taking in the scenery, and getting into that relaxed holiday mode. Going on a road trip with Andy is funny, because you stop so often, in order for him to get a photo. Not even joking... In the first hour, we had pulled over four times for a photo opportunity! Sometimes I'd get out, have a wander, take a picture; sometimes I'd stay in the car, have a read, have a nap.

We stopped at a really cool place (no idea where it was), kind of like a beach, but with a really weird landscape, and skimmed stones and had a walk there. We also stopped for a while in a town called Deloraine... Pretty small but very cute, and we had the BEST lunch there, in a reopened pub/cafe that had only opened that day, called the Empire.

Off on our way again, we went to Ashgrove Cheese, to stock up on cheese (surprisingly) and also grabbed some olives, dip etc, to have for dinner. Then on we went to Cradle Mountain Lodge. When we nearly got there, I started jumping out my seat and shrieking – there were wombats!! They are so bloody cute! We stopped (again!), took loads of pictures, fell in love with them all, then realised we were about 100m away from where we'd be staying that night, and these wombats were pretty much in our back yard!

So, onto Cradle Mountain Lodge. One of the most awesome places I've ever stayed. We were in a Pencil Pine Cabin, and the fire had been lit before we arrived so it was warm and toasty, with a beautiful wooden balcony that looked out on the lake... and the wallabies and wombats! Heaven! We got out the cheese and red wine, and rugged up (it was COLD!) and then sat out on the balcony for a few hours, living the loveliest life... Until it was too cold and we had to go inside and drink our red wine by the fire. Tasmania is amazing!!
