Current location: San Diego
11.11am, Having breakfast. Our aim was to be back on the road by 11am, but we found a sunny table and ordered a healthy breakfast, and just couldn't drag ourselves away for a little while. Once we'd eaten up and caught some rays, we piled back back in the car for a five-hour trip...to Las Vegas! This was one of the destinations I was most excited about on our trip, but so far I had absolutely loved each place we'd been to, so Vegas had a lot to live up to.
We only stopped once, for some Mexican food, and before too long, the hazy heights of Vegas came into view. It's a crazy place, which was evident even when seeing it from a distance. It just looks so strange to be in a desert, and have a bunch of skyscrapers ahead of you. Such a contrast between wilderness and ultimate urbanity.
We got to our hotel (the amazing Monte Carlo, which cost $300m to build!) and stepped out the car into gorgeous heat. I love how sunny it's been over the past couple of days! Even though it was late afternoon and it wouldn't be long before the sun went down, it was still hot enough to go out in just a dress.
After we checked in and went to our lovely room, we decided to have a wander down the strip. It was bonkers. I have never been anywhere like it in my life; everything is so much larger than life, and there are colours, sounds, sights popping and buzzing everywhere. There was such a mix of people, too: drunk Spring Breakers, high rollers with young, hot blondes, old people wandering with fluorescent drinks in hand. It was amazing! We went in and out of a few casinos, and had a drink, then moseyed back to the hotel to decide on our evening's plan.
After grabbing some food and having a quick nap to recharge, we still hadn't really made a plan. Other than sequins; they were always part of my plan. We got on glitziest dresses (the girls), loaded up on Red Bull (the boy) and headed back down the strip to Caesar's Palace (where The Hangover is set). We'd heard that Ke$ha was playing at the club there, Pure, but when we arrived the queue was massive, and snaked all the way through the casino.
Luckily for us, Andy knows people who know people, and after making a couple of calls, we were ushered to the front of the queue, given free entry and free drinks all night. Sweet! Pure was mad, everyone was dressed up, excited and dancing so we went for it and joined it. We pretty much didn't leave the dancefloor all night, and ended up right next to where Ke$ha came on to sing a few songs. She was awesome actually, which I hadn't been expecting, and the night was just crazy and fun and just how I imagined Vegas.
We came out of Pure straight into the casino (clever planning there, Mr Hotel Planner!) and, not feeling tired at all, decided to do a bit of gambling. We were still sussing it all out though, and weren't betting much (although Ri did win 11c!), so after a while we wandered back to our hotel. By now it was about 3am and Beck was a bit sleepy after all her epic driving, so we dropped her off. The three of us still weren't tired (Vegas! You're mental! I'm not getting tired!) so we went back out, heading for the casino in our hotel. A bit of roulette and a lot of slot machines later, we were being offered free drinks and were $20ish up...but still not tired. Something to do with the oxygen they pump into the casinos, I guess!
Eventually, Ri and I sloped off to bed at about 5.30am, while the Red Bull was still coursing through Andy's veins and he went for a skate along the strip, until 9am. As you do. Welcome to Vegas!
