Thursday 14 March - Day 8 in the USA

Current location: On the road to Grand Canyon
11.11am, Driving. Travelling America by road has really shown how absolutely giant the country is. We have been driving for hours each day, through really diverse and often really sparse landscape, then wehn we get to our destination it's always completely different from where we've been the day before. But then, when you look on a map, it's such a tiny distance travelled!

Anyway, today, with only minimal hangovers, we hopped in our trusty car with our trusty driver (amazeballs Becky) and left Vegas, stopping at the goodbye/welcome sign on the way. In such a small amount of time, we had left the city behind (it's weird how small it actually is, in such a huge desert) and were on our way to the Grand Canyon.

By the time we arrived there, it was another scorcher of a day. I was totally unprepared for how overwhelming the canyon would be. As it's SO huge, there could be no way to get its size into a picture so, even though I thought I knew what to expect, it really surprised me! Not just the depth of the canyon but also how far in went off into the distance. It was pretty scary watching people on the edge of the rocks (there are barriers, but only in some parts) and you can see how easily someone could fall off and plunge to their death! I was getting very nervous watching Becky doing yoga poses and Andy wandering towards the edge in search of a better shot!

We walked around the top, stopped for more photos and, even though it was so hot, there was still some snow left from early in the week. Bizarre! After a couple of hours, we hopped back in the car and continued on our way to Flagstaff. The journey didn't take long, and we were there in time to check into our hotel (the Monte Vista), which is rumoured to be haunted, and go to the underground bar for happy hour.

Becky had been raving about a restaurant called Diablo Burger, so we had to try it. And oh my goodness. Anyone in the Flagstaff area MUSt go and eat there; it was definitely in my top three meals of the trip. It was a really small, cute little place, with a relaxed and friendly vibe, and we spent a while there talking about our favourite moments/foods/nights/people/memories from the trip. Tomorrow, we go back to Phoenix for our last night and then on Saturday morning, it will be time to fly back to the UK (or LA if you're Rianne!). I can't believe how quickly the holiday is coming to an end :(

When we got back to the hotel, we had a few more drinks and a game of pool, but all got sleepy pretty quickly so went back to our room. Thanks to it being Spring Break, and our room being next door to some pretty crazy partygoers, we didn't get much sleep that night, but still loved the hotel.
