Sunday 10 March - Day 4 in the USA

Current location: On the road to San Diego, America!
11.11am, Just beginning our ROAD TRIP! Today we were starting our journey to San Diego and, for the first day since we got here, the sun was properly shining and it was lovely and hot! We got up early again, packed our bags, and off we went to the supermarket.

This was a bit of an experience – all the foods I'd heard about while growing up reading Judy Blume books (Twinkies? Tootsie rolls? Lucky Charms?) were there in abundance... They even had a whole section of the supermarket dedicated to Pop Tarts! We were quite a lot like children running around the grocery store, grabbing anything that took our fancy (Goldfish crackers?!) until we decided we should probably get on the road if we were going to spend any of the day not sitting in a car. Super excited, we set off, Becky driving, Andy riding shotgun, Rianne and I (the kids) in the back. And we drove almost immediately into a traffic jam. Boo. I took the opportunity to take pictures of the comedy numberplates, though.

Luckily, it didn't last too long and Ri had bought car games (in the form of Sporcle) to keep us entertained. In no time at all, we were out of the city and heading into the desert. It was crazy! You would drive for an hour without seeing much other than cacti, and then there would be a tiny town with a petrol station and a motel. It was just like the movies! Some of it was a bit scary (passing a prison, seeing a sign warning not to pick up hitchhikers!) but mainly it was just so cool. We also passed a few checkpoints, and were on our best behaviour (all the police carry guns!) but got waved through every time.

By the time we reached San Diego, it was early evening but the sun was still out. Our hotel was totes amazeballs, and right on the beach, so we went down for a quick afternoon sunbathe before enjoying complimentary cocktails and getting ready to go out. We drove across town to meet Beck's friend Mike, who suggested we went to Phil's BBQ for dinner. What an amazing suggestion. Even while we were queueing (I'm quickly learning you very often have to queue for restaurants here), we could see the food and it looked so good. We'd definitely worked up an appetite by the time we sat down, which was lucky as the portion sizes were huuuuge. America is definitely the land of plenty. It might not surprise you to learn that Phil's BBQ was featured on Man Vs Food

Stuffed and happy, we headed back to our pimping hotel (after a quick walk along the boardwalk, where we inadvertently walked through a crime scene!) to find a complimentary bottle of champagne waiting for us (mentioning it was Beck's birthday was a good move!). So we took it to the rooftop, which was empty except for a tabletop fire to keep us warm, and stretched out. San Diego is proving to be pretty darn incredible, and we've only been here a few hours!
